About LAGS Medical Centers

LEARN ABOUT OUR VISION AND WHAT WE DO FOR PATIENTS

Our Story…

LAGS Medical Centers is a pain management group operating throughout California, Oregon, Washington & Nevada. Since 2000, the LAGS alternative approach to pain treatments has returned patients to a healthy, active lifestyle: restoring function by minimizing pain. Dr. Lagattuta served as a Team Doctor/Physiatrist for the Chicago Bulls basketball team during their record, 72-game winning season in the Michael Jordan era. He attributes much of that success to seeing that pain can be treated by restoring movement and minimizing the use of drugs. Eventually, he developed the MAP protocol: a 3-tiered approach directly addressing pain sources from Metabolic, Anatomical and Psychological perspectives, rather than just covering up pain with opiates or pain pumps. Focusing interventional, less-invasive treatments on a patient’s pain source(s) can remove the need for pain-related emergency room visits, avoid costly surgeries and ultimately reduce the cost of care.

LAGS has grown to care, at scale, for a large base of ‘underserved’ (Medicaid/Medicare patients), who often experience challenges in accessing healthcare. Our 30+ clinics are ideally equipped to serve these and many other patients across 22 counties.

OUR MISSION

Improving our patients’ quality of life by reducing pain and restoring function using the latest evidence-based, minimally-invasive, interventional treatments

Pain Management: A More Responsible Approach In The Opioid Crisis

Actively Confronting The Epidemic

As a pain management specialty group practice with 30+ locations, we see nearly 13,500 unique patients each month – many who have been on opioids for years, often addicted, but still in severe pain. For many years LAGS has treated patients according to the CDC’s 2016 guidelines: ‘Nonopioid Treatments for Chronic Pain’ – seeing a significant reduction in MME (morphine milligram equivalents) numbers per patient. While the nationwide average for pain physicians MMEs is 120, our combined patient average resides below 40 – that puts our opioid prescriptions at 69% lower than the national average.

Treat The Source of The Pain, Don’t Mask It

We discovered that if a patient suffers from painful neuropathy, giving them opioids does nothing to diminish their pain. The Mayo Clinic published a study concluding the main thing opioids do for painful neuropathy patients is to turn them into opioid addicts, often causing them to become unemployed, as high doses of opioids can affect a person’s ability to think clearly, safely operate motor vehicles, etc. When founder/Chief Medical Officer: Francis Lagattuta, M.D. began to properly diagnose small fiber neuropathy in these patients (a diagnosis their prior doctors often missed), he was able to put them on a proper treatment program for this condition. We are actively seeking ways to raise awareness of the ineffectiveness of opioids and alternatives to traditional pain management. All of this aligns with our mission: Improving our patients’ quality of life by reducing pain and restoring function using the latest evidence-based, minimally-invasive, interventional treatments.
